16 Jun Telecom Exchange NYC Tackles Fiber Deficiency in North America
Vertical Systems Group recently reported that the U.S. Fiber Gap (‘unlit’ commercial buildings without optical fiber facilities that readily connect to business network services) continued to narrow in 2015 as business fiber penetration grew to 46.2%. This benchmark figure, quantifying fiber-connected multi-tenant and company-owned buildings in the U.S. with twenty or more employees, equates to more than two million individual business establishments.
Accessibility to fiber-based services is a major priority for business customers who want the capacity and scalability necessary to future-proof their networks. The most widely deployed access technology for delivery of Carrier Ethernet services in the U.S., fiber is also increasingly implemented to support higher speed Hybrid VPNs, Cloud and Internet connectivity, mobile traffic aggregation, emerging SDN-enabled Dynamic Network Connectivity Services and other business applications.
Overall fiber optic usage (residential plus commercial) in the U.S still ranks low at 18th among the countries ranked by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), utilizing just 9.4%. (Japan and South Korea lead with nearly 70% penetration). Canada also significantly trails other developed countries, ranking 22nd in fiber penetration and utilizing only a little over 5%.
The important discussion of fiber deficiency in both the U.S. and Canada will be addressed on the second of five CEO Roundtable sessions at the upcoming Telecom Exchange (TEX) NYC event, taking place June 22 at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC.
Moderated by Robert Powell, Editor & Creator of Telecom Ramblings, the TEX NYC second CEO Roundtable, “Fiber as an Investment – Addressing North America’s Fiber Deficiency” will examine and discuss fiber penetration in the U.S. and Canada, the worthiness of investing in fiber deployments, and determine if we are indeed moving fast enough, or if a stronger, more unified North American plan for fiber is needed.
Participating in this critical industry discussion include panelists Jonathan Martone, Director, Data Center Engineering for CenturyLink; Erick Contag, Chief Executive Officer for GlobeNet; Al DiGabriele, Senior Vice President of Product Management & Marketing for Hibernia Networks; David Prescott, Chief Executive Officer for Integra Optics; and Rob Barlow, Chief Executive Officer for WireIE.
Telecom Exchange is the premier industry networking event where communications and technology meet. TEX NYC takes place June 22 at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC, and kicks off with an Opening Reception on June 21 at Battery Gardens. Vertical Systems Group is a Media Partner for this event.
