16 Jun Telecom Exchange NYC Tackles Fiber Deficiency in North America

Vertical Systems Group recently reported that the U.S. Fiber Gap (‘unlit’ commercial buildings without optical fiber facilities that readily connect to business network services) continued to narrow in 2015 as business fiber penetration grew to 46.2%. This benchmark figure, quantifying fiber-connected multi-tenant and company-owned buildings in the U.S. with twenty or more employees, equates to more than two million individual business establishments.

Accessibility to fiber-based services is a major priority for business customers who want the capacity and scalability necessary to future-proof their networks. The most widely deployed access technology for delivery of Carrier Ethernet services in the U.S., fiber is also increasingly implemented to support higher speed Hybrid VPNs, Cloud and Internet connectivity, mobile traffic aggregation, emerging SDN-enabled Dynamic Network Connectivity Services and other business applications.

Overall fiber optic usage (residential plus commercial) in the U.S still ranks low at 18th among the countries ranked by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), utilizing just 9.4%. (Japan and South Korea lead with nearly 70% penetration). Canada also significantly trails other developed countries, ranking 22nd in fiber penetration and utilizing only a little over 5%.
